Small Garden, Big Color
Before
A small garden that previously held two aphid-infested shrubs and scattered annuals needed a makeover. The owner preferred primary colors over pastels, and wanted long-blooming perennial flowers that would offer nice "pops" of color and texture.
Working in clay soil and partial sun conditions, Garden Design Maine came up with a layout that maximized color from summer through fall, would be easy-to-care for, and could be added to in subsequent years.
Anchoring the design was a new (2022) variety of hydrangea called Little Lime Punch
On either side was a selection of perennials in primary colors (reds, oranges, yellows, whites, blues and purples) that could flourish in just 4 or 5 hours of sunlight, and do well in clay soil with only minor amendments
The chosen design included delphiniums, echinacea, rudbeckia, reblooming dayliles, phlox, iris, geum, heuchera and bellflower.
Installed in May 2022, this picture was taken two months later and featured plenty of gorgeous blooms that continued, or repeated, throughout September.
