Redo of Raised Ranch Landscaping
Before
This raised ranch originally featured overgrown burning bushes, creeping juniper, and some red & yellow lilies - all of which had been growing for years.
Hoping to enhance the curb appeal of the home, Garden Design Maine put together some design options to maximize:
Long blooming, low-maintenance perennial choices for full sun
A pastel color palette featuring pinks, purples, soft yellows and whites
"Spiky" flowers, which the owner preferred
A couple of options to add winter interest after all herbaceous perennials die back each year
Site or project constraints:
Owner wanted to avoid adding any evergreen shrubs such as dwarf spruces, etc. since the far side of the property is flanked by conifers
Owner decided to keep the burning bushes in place and simply trim them back significantly (cheaper / easier than removing them)
This early design rendition, featuring a combination of long-blooming herbaceous perennials, flowering shrubs and dwarf Alberta Spruces was nixed after learning the owner wanted to avoid evergreen shrubs and keep the burning bushes in place.
Final design highlights included a variegated dogwood to add visual interest all year, complete with red twigs in winter; purplish-foliaged and dark stemmed selections to contrast with more traditional medium greens; a compact hydrangea; and other long-blooming flower choices to complement the pastel color palette.
Installation done in May 2023. The customer provides weekly updates on how the plants are doing, which we LOVE!!!
