When a previous Garden Design Maine client moved to a new property in Sebago, Maine, they loved the views of Sebago Lake but wanted a quick way to add colorful, low‑maintenance flowers around a large oak tree in their backyard. The yard had lovely natural elements but lacked vibrant garden color, especially in the part‑sun conditions beneath the oak’s canopy.
We designed a simple yet eye‑catching oak tree garden that thrives in partial sun and provides continuous interest throughout the growing season. Our planting plan focused on a mix of long‑blooming flowers and brightly foliaged perennials that perform well in this microclimate.
The garden includes customer favorites like catmint and geranium for extended bloom times and spring‑loving bleeding heart for elegant early color. To add texture and contrast, we selected two varieties of heucherella alongside airy astilbe. A crisp layer of black mulch, chosen by the client, finished the design and helps with moisture retention and weed suppression.
This project is a great example of how thoughtful plant selection and seasonal planning can transform an open yard area into a vibrant, welcoming garden that complements existing landscape features like mature oaks while bringing lasting beauty to a Sebago outdoor space.
